Optimization with Parametric Runs (Opt1&2) in English - Online
Online - Lesson Optimization 1+2
Prequisites
Participants are expected to be familiar with the content covered in the basic course and to review this material as individual preparation for the training.
This is where building simulation truly shines: Optimization is not only the most valuable output of simulation – it’s also the part that’s genuinely fun. Instead of just analysing performance, you design better solutions – efficiently, confidently, and creatively.
In this session, you’ll learn how to run structured parametric studies and targeted design optimizations using the Parametric Runs tool and IDA ICE’s integrated optimization engine AutoMOO. Whether your goal is to improve thermal comfort, reduce energy use, or balance multiple objectives – this course gives you the tools and strategies to make it happen.
Key topics:
✅ Fundamentals of single- and multi-objective optimization
✅ Working with design constraints
✅ Using AutoMOO to define and balance competing goals
✅ Financial analysis (e.g. LCC, energy costs)
✅ Sensitivity and robustness studies
✅ Interpretation and visualization of results
✅ Hands-on exercises for building and system optimization
A practical example:
In one study, IDA ICE was used to find the optimal combination of overhang depth, glazing type, window height and width. The aim was to balance multiple performance indicators, including:
• Median daylight factor
• Average daylight factor
• Percentage of Dissatisfied Hours (PDH) as an indicator for thermal discomfort
• Number of operating hours above 27 °C operative temperature
• Delivered energy in kWh/m²
• Delivered energy total in kWh
By running a Parametric Runs study, you can evaluate all these criteria simultaneously and explore the results using a Parallel Coordinates Plot – making it easy to identify the “needle in the haystack”.
